The Washington State Ferries originated in the early 1900s. The early ferrries
were steamer ships known as the "Mosquito Fleet." After World War
II, labor costs made ferry systems very challenging to operate. By the late
1940s, this brought ferry services to a halt. The state of Washington recognized
that ferries were the life line of many communities that heavily relied on ferry
services.
