Titanic Model Ship (Natural)
The Royal Marine Ship Titantic was built between 1910 and 1912. Named by J.
Bruce Ismay, she was 883 feet long (1/6 of a mile), 92 feet wide and weighed
46,328 tons. With almost 35 feet below water, her total height reached 104 feet
from keel to bridge.
The grandest ship of the time, this luxury liner was able to carry over 3500
passengers, with the wealthy experiencing the most luxurious and modern accommodations
available. The Titanic with its modern technology and luxury cost $7.3 million
to build.
The Titanic was believed to be unsinkable. Called a lifeboat in itself; she
was designed to remain afloat with any two of three compartments flooded and
to withstand a collision at the joint of any two compartments.
The Titanic carried only 20 lifeboats, which at this time met the requirements
of The British Board of regulations. No cruise liners carried enough lifeboats
to evacuate all the passengers and crew in this era.
Her maiden voyage was to become the greatest marine disaster in history. On
April 10, 1912 she set sail from Southampton to arrive in New York. At 11:40
p.m. on the 14th of April 1912, the cruise liner Titanic struck an iceberg.
Less than three hours later, she plummeted to the ocean bottom. This night,
many legends were born, 1502 lives were lost, and 705 were saved. R.M.S. Carpathia
was spotted at the break of dawn and rescued the few survivors floating in the
small number of lifeboats.
