Titanic Ship (Painted)
We are all familiar with the magnificent ship Titanic. Her heart-wrenching
story has become a legend which movies, songs and books all entail. The grandest
ship of her time upon which the wealthy felt at home with her unmatched luxuriously
lavished accommodations and amenities; the Titanic was built as their playground
for traveling to the United States of America.
The largest ship at the time capable of transporting 3500 passengers, the Titanic
was a stunning and unbelievable sight sitting at the Southampton port. Many
marveled at her massive size and spectacular beauty. The Titanic was 883 feet
long (1/6 of a mile), 92 feet wide and weighed 46,328 tons. With almost 35 feet
below water, her total height reached 104 feet from keel to bridge. The Titanic
with its modern technology and unmatchable luxury cost $7.3 million to build.
Named by J. Bruce Ismay, the Titanic was also known as the “Unsinkable
Ship.” With her design she was able to remain afloat with any two of three
compartments flooded and to withstand a collision at the joint of any two compartments.
Unfortunately on the night of April 10, 1912 the Titanic struck an iceberg puncturing
more than two compartments.
The Titanic only carried 20 lifeboats, which at the time met the requirements
of the British board of regulations. No cruise liners carried enough lifeboats
to evacuate all of the passengers and crew in this era. Three hours after striking
the iceberg the Titanic sunk to the bottom of the sea. Only 705 were rescued,
1502 were lost.
