Enterprise Model Yacht
Enterprise, the America's Cup sloop designed by William S. Burgess, was the
winner of the Americas' Cup in 1930. She won in the final race, crushing Shamrock
V just before the finish line, thanks to the masterful hands of her owner, millionaire,
Mike Vanderbilt.
After World War I new rules were designed and enforced to produce safer and
more seaworthy boats for America’s Cup racing. These design changes were
to balance hull length, sail area, and hull shape. Traditional Gaff rigged topsails
and mainsails were replaced with a single triangular sail rising straight to
the top of the mast known as a Bermuda or Marconi rig. A large jib, also known
as a Genoa, was added in later years.
The exceptionally large racing yachts known as the J-class of boats adopted
these changes for racing in the America’s Cup.
These massive boats were designed with a 75 to 87 foot water line with their
parachute spinnakers reaching as large as 18,000 square feet. Designed and manned
for speed, these incredible racing yachts sacrificed simplicity for lightening
speed requiring large crews, special tackle and geared winches.
Enterprise was the largest and fastest of all the J-sloops ever constructed.
Eighty feet long at the water line with her great mast reaching 162 feet into
the air this colossal ship was a huge racing machine.
