Bluenose II Model Schooner Painted
Medium 38"L
Launched in Lunenburg, the Bluenose II schooner has a very special place in
the history of navigation and yachts. Built to fish off the Newfoundland coast,
the ship soon turned out to be such a fast sailer that she won all the great
classical regattas along the USA's Eastern coast. The Bluenose II Model Yacht
was used not only as a racing ship bu as a cod-fishing schooner. The Bluenose
was the response to a Nova Scotian defeat in a race for schooners established
by the Halifax Herald newspaper in 1920. After fishing season, the Bluenose
Yacht defeated the ship Elsie from Gloucester, Massachusetts, returning the
trophy to Nova Scotia. During the next 17 years, the Bluenose II faced no North
American challengers. She was built in Nova Scotia on March 26, 1921, and shipwrecked
near Haiti in 1946.
