This Item Is Currently Out Of Stock!
The original Bluenose was a hard working fishing boat turned legendary racer.
The pride of the Canadian fishing fleet this ship was designed to race for the
International Trophy, a prize established by W.H. Dennis, the publisher of the
Halifax Herald. This prize was established as an answer to the complaint that
the America’s Cup was a race between yachts and not working boats.
In the races on October 22 and 24, the amazing ship Bluenose fulfilled her
racing destiny and design by winning with a margin of more than two miles, beating
the U.S. contender Elsie. Two years after this exciting and precedent setting
race, Bluenose made her way sailing to Toronto, Canada to represent Canada in
the Century of Progress Exposition. Thousands of boating enthusiasts and race
goers came to admire the pride of the Canadian fishing fleet, this remarkable
hard working fishing boat.
With the threat of World War II and the German U-boats, Bluenose was tied up
until she was sold to the West Indies Trading Company in 1942. At this time
she sailed under the command of Captain Wilson Berringer in inter-island trade
until 1946. Off of Haiti Bluenose’s long and legendary career as a fishing boat
and racer ended when she grounded, broke her back and sank.
Bluenose II was built in 1963 by the government of Nova Scotia. She is a replica
of the original Bluenose, and sails as a goodwill ambassador the Canadian province.
