Atlantic Model Yacht
Limited Quantity Of This Item!
Built in 1903, the Atlantic’s greatest accomplishment, establishing her
path of fame and legend, was her astounding victory of the Emperor’s Cup
in 1905. One of eleven yachts joining in the celebrated race put up by Kaiser
Wilhelm, the Atlantic was primed for her battle course between New York and
Lizardhead, England.
Captain Charles Barr, a long time veteran of America’s Cup, was in command
of the Atlantic throughout this exhilarating race. The exceptional performance
this proficient commandant executed during this race continues to even today
possess the record for her astonishing 348-mile day’s run on May 23-24.
Her overall time commanding and victoriously finishing the race was not beaten
until 1968.
Atlantic was eventually sold to James Cox Bradley, when she began her subsequent
career as a sub chaser tender. Cornelius Vanderbuilt purchased the handsome
ship after World War I had ended.
Unfortunately this legendary racing vessel was not used much for racing under
Cornelius’s possession. Amidst World War II the Atlantic was transferred
to the U.S. Coast Guard for her newest venture as an antisubmarine craft. Following
the war, she was brought to the United State where she began her final and proudest
ventures yet as a vessel used for sail training in the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
